Mills Resistors

A typical source of dynamic compression in stock crossover networks is sand cast resistors. They have a temperature coefficient (TCR) of about 400ppm/°C. Ouch! Compare that to a TCR of about 50ppm/°C for most of the values of Mills resistors we use. Sand Cast resistors exhibit a rising resistance as temperature increases. These low cost resistors heat up instantly as current passes through them. This in turn means they have a higher resistance to loud sounds than they do to quiet sounds. You can guess what happens next - they let proportionally less of the loud sounds through.

Resistor found in a typical loudspeaker:

Sand Cast

The majority of Mills values we use are 800% better than sand cast resistors. These non-magnetic, non-inductive wire-wound resistors were specifically designed for high-end electronics, loudspeakers, and audiophile upgrades.  The all weld axial construction boasts an alumina ceramic core with a Nickel-Copper element, Silver plated Copper end-caps, and tinned Copper leads.  Aryton-Perry winding reduces inductive reactance and signal loss. These resistors exceed MIL-R-26E specs.  All resistor values are 1% tolerance.

Mills 12 watt resistors possess a big power handling for their size. They will handle overloads 10X its power rating (120 watts) for 5 seconds with operating voltages up to 1,000 VAC.  The body measures 1.188" +/- 0.062" in length by 0.312" +/- 0.031" in diameter.  The leads measure 1.500" in length minimum by 0.040" in diameter.
